What changes the price

• The rail, not the chair. A turn, landing or curve means a custom-built rail. That is the single biggest driver of price; a curved stairlift costs several times what a straight one does.
• Length. Standard rails cover a typical single flight. Longer runs add cost per extra section.
• Options. A powered swivel seat, a folding rail for a doorway at the bottom, or a heavier load rating each add to the price.
• Where you live. Outside major cities, travel charges are common, and fewer local installers means fewer competing quotes.
• Electrical work. Most lifts plug into a normal outlet. If one is not near the stairs, an electrician visit adds to the total.

Ongoing costs

Budget for the lift after the install, too.

• Annual service. Installers recommend a yearly service visit; some sell service plans.
• Batteries. The lift runs on batteries so it works in a power cut. They need replacing every few years.
• Removal. If you sell the house or no longer need the lift, removal is a separate charge. Some installers buy back recent units; ask before you buy.

Funding may reduce the price
